What are mind machines?

The term "mind machine" covers a large range of technologies that work to entrain your mind or consciousness. This term covers many categories of technology including audio visual stimulation (AVS) devices, electrical stimulation hardware, lucid dreaming machinery, and biofeedback. All of these technologies rely on physiological mechanisms known as the frequency following response, says that the brain will attempt to duplicate the frequency perceived by the sense organs. It is the reason why gazing into a campfire or aquarium is relaxing.

FAQ

What is an AVS device?

AVS devices are a type of mind machine which incorporate audio stimulation, isochronic tones and/or binaural beats, and photic stimulation, patterned flashing light. Visual and auditory stimuli vibrating at specific frequencies directly affect our brain wave patterns and can produce controlled effects; this is referred to as brain entrainment.

AVS devices are also known as light and sound machines, however we prefer the term AVS device because it more accurately describes the functionality of the device and is less easily confused with other topics.

What are binaural beats and isochronic sound?

Brain entrainment relies on a range of sound that is below that of human hearing. For example if a 5Hz tone was played through a speaker, a person would interpret it as clicking noises. In order to perceive the tone, a different method must be used.

One technique for making inaudible tones audible is to play two frequencies together that are separated by the desired frequency (e.g. 400Hz and 405Hz to get 5Hz) this creates a sweeping noise at the desired frequency. This effect can best be illustrated by tuning a guitar, as two strings get closer to the same frequency the “beats” decrease in frequency. A binaural beat occurs when two speakers play different tones, but they are isolated each to one ear and the combination of the sounds happens within the brain.

Another technique is using a sequence of pulsed sound then silence at a particular frequency. This pattern of sound and silence guides the mind into the same pattern similar to binaural beats.

How should I use mind machines?

The programs that come with the iLightz app average about 30 minutes. The programs were selected in order to give the most accessibility to users. There are no limits to the amount of time you can spend using the device other than your schedule. AVS products produce effects very closely linked to the effects of meditation. Just like meditation, there is a lower limit to the amount of time you can spend using the product. Typically it takes around 7-8 minutes for your brain to respond and react to AVS. Due to this, programs under 10 minutes in length are not effective.

For best results, sessions should occur regularly, we recommend daily at the same time every day. Doing more than one session in a day is fine as well, regularity is the key. Also be sure that distractions are removed from your environment. Other stimulus makes entrainment far more difficult, and less effective.

Are there any age restrictions for AVS?

There are no age restrictions on using AVS technology, however when using on individuals younger than 20 we advise caution for your first session. Visual stimulation can trigger epileptic seizures in those with photosensitivity. For more info on photosensitivity see our Medical Info Page.

Whenever using any sort of stimulation for the first time caution should be excercized. Everyone is effected differently and until you know how you are effected before attempting more intense sessions.
